What’s Happening in Nursery This Half Term?
Our Nursery topic for this half term is Summer Days and Holidays. We'll be exploring and discussing what we enjoy most about summer and holidays. The children will have opportunities to share their thoughts, listen to each other, and practice taking turns while developing their communication skills.
We’ll also focus on staying safe in the sun. The children will learn why sun safety is important and explore ways to protect themselves. Through fun discussions and activities, they will understand what they need to stay safe.
In addition to these, the children will be enhancing their number skills by sorting clothes into different sets based on their own experiences. They’ll also engage in role-playing with money, adding numbers together and counting to ensure they have the correct amount. We’ll continue practicing number recognition and writing numbers throughout the term.
Our role-play areas will also provide a great chance for the children to take orders, using their mark-making and writing skills to practice writing down requests. As part of our topic, they’ll expand their vocabulary and communication skills, focusing on words related to summer and holidays. Using Read Write Inc. sounds, the children will hunt for sounds to form holiday-related words.
A fun activity this term will be making ice lollies! The children can choose their favourite flavors and ingredients, and we’ll enjoy the treats the day after they’re made - just like we’re on holiday or having a fun day out. This imaginative play will encourage them to think about their favourite holiday destinations and what we’d need to get there.
We’ll also dive into the wonders of the sea, learning about the animals and creatures that live underwater. The children will explore the effects of pollution on the ocean and discuss ways to help protect sea life through recycling. We’ll be creating a beautiful Under the Sea display, highlighting the importance of caring for our oceans.
A highlight of the term will be a visit to the Blue Planet Aquarium, where the children will see sea life up close and explore different marine habitats.
Throughout the term, the children will also have the opportunity to visit the Reception class in small groups as part of their transition for September.

What the Children Have Been Up To Over the Last Four Weeks
Over the past four weeks, the children have been working hard and exploring how we grow, as well as how seeds develop into plants. They’ve learned that eating healthy foods helps us grow big and strong. The children also discovered that exercise makes their hearts beat faster, and they feel happier after being active.
The children have been actively involved in looking after the Nursery Garden, helping with weeding, turning over the soil, and planting wild bee and butterfly-friendly seeds. They’ve thoroughly enjoyed spending time outdoors and contributing to the garden’s growth. Each child has planted their very own sunflower seed, and we’re excited to hear how tall their sunflowers have grown!
We’ve also been practicing for Sports Day, and the children loved participating in the races and cheering each other on. It was wonderful to see their excitement and enthusiasm, with lots of support from the adults.
With the lovely weather, we’ve spent most of our time outdoors. The children have been drawing real flowers, making petal playdough, and planting seeds and flowers. They’ve also been learning about money and developing a strong understanding of coins. The children had a lot of fun using real money in our shop, buying food and managing their own spending.
Each day, the children have been practicing writing their names and numbers on whiteboards as part of our morning routine. They’re making great progress and doing really well!
Thank you for your ongoing support this half term. We hope the children have a wonderful and restful half term break!
