Star of the Week 11/9/17

Star of the Week 11/9/17 1

With so many children working really hard this week, it has been a very tough decision to choose a 'Star of the Week'.

But, after lots of thought, this week's 'Star of the Week' award goes to... Michael!

I have been so impressed with Michael's listening skills and his attitude to learning this week. He has been really helpful around the classroom too! Well done Michael, you should be very proud of yourself!

Welcome to Year 1!

It was lovely to see so many smiley faces coming into school yesterday. We have had a great start to the year and have enjoyed getting to know our new classrooms and each other. We're really looking forward to a fantastic year together!

We thought you may find the following information useful for this year:

PE

PE is on Monday and Wednesday.

Please send PE kits into school with your child every Monday morning. PE kits will stay in school until Wednesday and will be sent back home with your child at the end of the day.

Please make sure all PE bags and PE kit is clearly labelled with your child’s name.

One of the skills we have been working on this week is how to get ourselves dressed and undressed for PE. It would be wonderful if you could practise at home by encouraging your child to get themselves dressed for school in the morning and into their pajamas for bed.

Water bottles

It has been great to see so many children coming into school with their water bottles today. If your child hasn’t done already, please send them into school with a water bottle with their name clearly labelled. These will stay in school and will be filled up each morning.

Snack time

Unless your child has paid to have school fruit this half term, please send them into school  each day with a piece of fruit to eat for their snack.

Reading books

Reading books will be sent home this week on Thursday 7th September. Please aim to read every night if you can (even if it's just one page). Reading books will be changed on Mondays and Thursdays. Please feel free to read books from home (or comics/e-books) too. The more you read, the better!

Homework

Your child will be given a Learning Log on Friday, which will be used throughout the year for homework. Please see the inside of the Learning Log front cover for how this will be used. Learning Logs will be sent home every Friday. Please return them to school by the following Thursday.

We were so lucky to see lots of animals out and about and thoroughly enjoyed our talk about 'Animal Life Processes'.

I am so sad that this is our last school trip together as a class BUT it was definitely the best and lots of the children agreed!

Enjoy looking at the pictures and telling your Mums, Dads, Nannies and Grandads all about your exciting day! frown

This week has been our Health and Well Being focus week and I must say, Class 3 have super knowledge on how to be healthy! They know that we have to eat lots of healthy food and do lots of exercise to keep us fit!

This week the children entered a healthy meal competition where they designed a healthy meal. They all made sure to include vegetables and protein!  The School Council decided who would win the competition in Year 1 and it went to....

Cameron!

Congratulations Cameron for your fantastic idea on a healthy meal! Da iawn!

I can't thank the parents enough for all the delicious fruit that came in at the beginning of the week! This came in very handy for the children to make their tasty fruit kebabs and as always, I am very thankful for the support! The children really enjoyed making their fruit kebabs and they even made repeating patterns! It was also excellent to see the children try a fruit that they perhaps hadn't tried before!

We have also been thinking about how exercise helps our body and how it changes the way we look and feel. Each day we have walked 1km around the school field and it was super to see the children getting out and having some fresh air before they started their work!

They had to make a flower, thinking carefully about the different parts. Some of the boys thought about the different parts of a cress plant, which we looked at during our Science investigation! They also had to create a castle for the giant from Jack and the Beanstalk; they all came up with some very good ideas and also set up some traps!

They have all worked so incredibly hard and I can't thank them enough (or the parents!) for all the terrific work they've put in! They had a month of learning a chant and a 2 minute routine which they performed in front of many other schools and other family members. It was a huge stage, which they weren't used to, but I couldn't have asked them to be any better! You did so well girls, you should be very proud of yourselves, you achieved so much in such a short amount of time! All the children looked absolutely fabulous in their red, green and white outfits! This week's focus is the story of St David, so the children should know the story and a few facts about our patron saint of Wales!

I also have to say a massive thank you to Class 3 and their parents for creating such amazing pieces of creative art for their homework over half term on 'What is Wales to me?' I am overwhelmed with how much effort has been put into them and they are now looking amazing on our class display. I can't wait to see you tomorrow and hear all about your exciting stories about what you've been up to during the break!

We're going to be so busy this week Class 3! Please make sure to bring in your teddy/figure so we can design a cape for them! Just remember, they shouldn't be any bigger than 30cm due to the lack of space!

I am so excited to see all your fantastic shoeboxes to show me What Wales is to you. I'm sure you've come up with lots of super ideas! If you have lots of things to bring in tomorrow then please feel free to bring them in Tuesday.

The children found out that the crunchie didn't melt very well and the dark and milk chocolate were the best! After talking about how we melt chocolate and carrying out our method step-by-step the children wrote about what they found out and compared this to their prediction. I think we were all tempted to eat the scrumptious chocolate, but well done for resisting temptation class 3! 🍫🎉

For our Christmas show the children will be reciting a Christmas poem.
Please could you help your child to learn their lines off by heart.

Elves:

Santa's Christmas Prayer by Warren Jennings

The sleigh was packed,
the reindeer were fed,
But Santa still knelt
by the side of the bed.

Reindeers:

"Dear Father," he prayed,

"Be with me tonight.
There's much work to do,
and my schedule is tight.

Cards:

I must jump in my sleigh
and streak through the sky,
knowing full well
that I need to fly high.

Warm clothes:

I will visit each household

befrore the first light,

I'll cover the world

and all in one night.

Trees:

With sleigbells a-ringing,

I'll land on each roof,

Amid the soft clatter

of each little hoof.

Diners:

To get in the house

is the difficult part,

so ill slide down the chimney

of each little heart.

Class 3:

My sack will hold toys

to grant all their wishes.

The supply will be endless

like loaves and the fishes.

I will fill all the stockings

and not leave a track.

I'll eat every cookie

that's left for my snack.

Class 4:

I can do all these things Lord,

only through You,

I just need your blessing,

then its easy to do.

All this is to honor

the birth of the One,

that was sent to redeem us,

Your most Holy Son.

Class 3 and 4:

So to all of my friends,

least Your glory I rob,

Please Lord, remind them,

who gave me this job"

Alex, Lexie and Thomas had a super time exploring the story of Rama and Sita on the interactive board! Thomas and Lexie completed the hard level puzzles and Alex enjoyed creating scenes of the story.

As you can see, Irene, Maggie and Lucy made a fantastic Hindu temple! They've all been very busy! I was so impressed with Amelia today, after she'd completed the subtraction sum challenges, she wrote her number bonds to 10! Da dawn Amelia, super work! smiley

We also had a super discussion about Remembrance Day and why we have it as well as why we do our minute silence and what we should think about during that time. The children thought about why we have Remembrance Day on the 11th day and the 11th month and have our silence at 11am. They came up with some super answers and questions and listened very well! Da iawn Class 3, Miss Griffiths and Miss Evans are very impressed!

Elliott and Ella had new jobs for the day as they dressed up as a fireman and a lollipop lady to show us the type of people that keep us safe. Class 3 loved showing off their best dance moves and exercising their vocal chords as we all sang Love Train, We are Family and one of Miss Griffiths' favourite songs...Reach for the Stars!
